The combination of train and folding bike offers a genuine sustainable mobility alternative to daily commuting by car. For the last mile to and from the station, simply hop on your bike. A folding bike is folded up in just a few steps and can be easily transported on our WESTbahn trains – no extra bike ticket required!
For the smooth transport of foldable bikes on our trains please take into consideration the following information.
Travelling by train with a folding bike – here how it works
Folding bikes are considered luggage and are carried free of charge on any WESTbahn train.
Due to the limited space onboard, make sure to fold your bike on the platform before boarding and only get on the train with your bike fully folded. Tip: Our trains are usually ready for boarding up to 30 minutes before departure at the respective departure stations – you have plenty of time to fold your bike and put it in the designated luggage rack without stress.
Make sure to fully fold your bike: Wheels folded, seat post and handlebar lowered. Please remove panniers and bags from the bike and stow them in the luggage rack or under your seat.
Storing your foldable bike
Always store your folding bike in one of our luggage racks on the lower decks of our trains – these are located in every carriage directly next to the sliding door when you board. Tip: in order to keep an eye on your folding bike during your journey, reserve a seat in the lower deck when booking your ticket.
Please note that folding bikes are not allowed to be stored on the platform nor in the upper decks of our trains due to the limited space available.
Depending on the folding bike model or brand, our free luggage security locks (deposit: 50 cent or 1 euro) can be used. To do this, pull the cable lock out of the holder and attach it to the handlebar or, if possible, directly to the frame of your bike.
Please note that for safety reasons, folding tandems, recumbents or cargo bikes cannot be transported. Charging the battery of your e-folding bike is not permitted on WESTbahn trains.
