Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart opened in 1843 by order of King Wilhelm I and is now one of Germany’s most important art museums. As a state museum and the largest art museum in Baden-Württemberg, it welcomes more than 250,000 visitors every year. Across approximately 12,000 m² of exhibition space, more than 700 years of art history meet extraordinary architecture.

Historic and modern architecture come together to create a unique ensemble. One of its most distinctive features is the colourful Stirling building, considered a masterpiece of Postmodern architecture and designated a cultural monument of special significance. The Staatsgalerie’s collection is just as diverse as its architecture. It encompasses painting, sculpture and graphic art from the Middle Ages to the present day and includes an internationally renowned collection of Classical Modernism. Highlights include works by world-famous artists such as Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso and Beuys.

The collection is complemented by changing special exhibitions that draw on current research to offer new perspectives on art and art history. In 2026, the major special exhibition “Alles surreal?!” is dedicated to Surrealism and, for the first time, brings photography, film, painting and sculpture together in a single exhibition. At its heart is the extraordinary spirit of experimentation that characterised the artists of this period.
