Starting March 2026, Westbahn connects Vienna with the south of Austria
We are continuing our growthpath and starting March 2026, we will connect Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt and Villach with 5 daily services in each direction. In line with our high Westbahn quality, our new southern extension will offer our passengers a relaxed and comfortable travel experience.

From March onwards, you can travel directly on our new SMILE trains from Vienna Central Station via Vienna Meidling and Wiener Neustadt to Bruck an der Mur, Graz, Kühnsdorf-Klopeiner See, Klagenfurt, Pörtschach am Wörthersee, and Villach. We are launching our services on the Southern Line in several stages:
From March 1, we will start with three daily connections in each direction, including a new stop in Payerbach-Reichenau.
From March 26, we will operate a demand-oriented timetable with a full Westbahn service on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, around public holidays, and during holiday periods, offering five connections per direction.
From May 29, there will be five daily Westbahn connections in each direction on the Southern Line. From this date, our trains will stop in Semmering (instead of Payerbach-Reichenau).
The gradual expansion of our services takes into account construction work carried out by ÖBB Infrastructure on the Southern Line between March 14 and May 28. This ensures that we can offer as many Westbahn connections as possible, particularly on high-demand days. This keeps rail travel flexible and reliable—while maintaining the high level of Westbahn comfort.
Fast, comfortable and direct connections with our new Stadler SMILE
To accomplish our network extension to Villach, we have procured 3 new state-of-the-art trains from Swiss manufacturer Stadler: the SMILE high-speed trainset with a top speed of 250 km/h and 11 carriages with a total length of 202 metres.
The interior of these ultra-modern trains will impress with our usual Westbahn quality and comfort:
- 422 seats, including 288 in our Standard Class (2)
- Comfortable leather seating at first-class level
- 230V power sockets at every seat
- Onboard WiFi
- Accessibility thanks to two step-free, level-access entrances and stairless access throughout the entire train
- Bike spaces
- Plus all our Westbahn features, including Relax Check-in and Westfixplatz – your free seat reservation.
